Accommodation woes in North campus

The task of finding appropriate, safe and well-located PGs in an unfamiliar city can be a difficult and daunting task. As all students can't be accommodated in a college hostel, they have to seek outside accommodation, either as a paying guest (PG) or on sharing-an-apartment basis. This is a lifetime experience in itself as students, especially those coming from outside Delhi; face a lot of difficulty in finding the right PG. The well-known North Campus attracts the maximum percentage of students living in Delhi. Consequently, demand for PG accommodations is high.  Let us explore the various PG options available in here and make sure that the price suits your budget.  The most sought after destinations; among others are Mukherjee Nagar, GTB Nagar, Kamala Nagar, Model Town and Kingsway Camp or PGs near North Campus of Delhi University. The room rent in this area varies from Rs 7,000 to Rs 15,000. Landlords are flexible as far as the number of occupants is concerned. So, generally 3-4 students club in their resources to share the rooms. These rooms are fully equipped with facilities such as air conditioner, RO, water, TV, Wi-Fi and power backup. In order to earn extra money PGs also provide homemade food as well.  Entire North Delhi is well connected to other parts of the city by the red and yellow lines of metro, feeder buses and auto rickshaws.

Mukherjee Nagar

Mukherjee Nagar is known for having cheaper rental options as about 90 per cent houses have been converted into paying guest (PG) accommodations, both for girls and boys.  Many actual owners have either sold their properties or given them on contract to those who run the PGs —in what is used to be primarily a residential area.  The area is a well-known PG hub.  PGs are available here for boys and girls with rentals around Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 per month.

The population of the area, which is supposed to be 40,000, actually runs into lakhs with the influx of students. According to rough estimates 5 lakh students come here from across India to prepare for competitive exams, particularly civil services, banking or to study in Delhi University. Mukherjee Nagar also has a number of well-regarded coaching institutes. It is safe, well connected and has a well-functioning market with small restaurants, juice, grocery shops, numerous printing and book stores.  The nearest metro station from this area is GTB Nagar, which is just a short auto ride away. Shared autos are also available here, so commuting has never been a problem.

Mukherjee comprises Hudson Line, Outram Lane and Reeds Lane. Hudson Lane - is just walking distance from GTB Nagar Metro station, PGs here that too are expensive and mostly are PG for girls. Though there are few options for boys. The PGs here cost between Rs. 6,000 to Rs 15,000 per month.  The best thing about Hudson Lane is that it has excellent connectivity, Kingsway Camp market, endless food outlet options, and lot of coaching institutes around. Another option is Outram Lane which is just across road to Hudson Lane. Therefore, same advantages apply here as well. But this place offers peaceful society, and variety of options. You can rent a flat in Outram Lane with your friends in the range of Rs. 12,000 to 28,000 per month but there are lot of cheaper options available in PGs for both boys and girls. Apart from that, you get easier connectivity to Mukherjee Nagar and GTB Nagar, where almost all big names in coaching institutes are situated.

 Indira Vihar is just next to Mukherjee Nagar, here you could find different variety of options. However, the rent rates are between Rs. 6,000 to 15,000 per month. Connectivity is not an issue either with the Guru Tech Bahadur Nagar (GTB Nagar) metro station just about 2 kilometres away.

Guru Tech Bahadur Nagar (GTB Nagar)

GTB Nagar is another spot you must look for PGs and shared accommodation start at a very pocket friendly Rs 7,000 per month and the area is known for having a number of coaching institutes and eateries for students to hang out at. The locality has its own metro station with direct connectivity to destinations such as Rajiv Chowk, Dwarka and Gurgaon. Vijay Nagar

Vijay Nagar is another hub for DU students. Here the rents and living expenses are comparatively lower. Vijay Nagar is well known for providing very economical PGs to students. It is also well connected to metro by GTB Nagar Metro Station.   Vijay Nagar is also a home to many good restaurants like The University Bistro, Phonebooth Cafe, Big Yellow Door, Cafeteria & Co. etc. Their specials to die for and every Delhi University student swears by them. Here, you can taste different cuisines from street food to Chinese, from BYD’s cheese bomb burger to Gobi Manchurian.

Kamla Nagar

This area is dominated by students, with over 10,000 of them staying in PGs and shared accommodation. It is barely 2 kilometers away from the Delhi University and has plenty of eating joints, shopping arcades and bookstores and you can find a PG here at monthly rentals of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000. Kamla Nagar has close proximity to the metro station, with the Vishwa Vidyalaya line just 3 kilometers away.
